I came to you guys when my wife and I did a living trust. Our attorney was most concern with my having everything - 401K, personal portifolio all in HP stock. He mentioned what had happened at IBM some years earlier and suggested I speak to a financial adviser.

I thank GOD we did.

John, you're quite right. If you can get a better "price" on your child's education, you can improve the ROI.

Great topic and I wholly endorse the practice of looking at the ROI of higher education. However, thing that my wife and I have found out is that those tuition numbers are like "rack rates" for hotel rooms. There are so many factors that can bring that number down. Some of the factors that we have seen bring the numbers down are scholarships, grants, and RA positions. So while there is the posted price that can be used for comparison the numbers are often driven down for those who wish to put forth some reasonable effort. And I am sure not all colleges and universities generosity is proportional to their posted tuitions.

According to the IRS, it makes no difference whether or not you already have a plan in place. Eligibility is based on the amount of coverage, company size, and average annual wages. More details can be found in the IRS press release http://www.irs.gov/newsroom/article/0,,id=221511,00.html.

Does the small business tax credit apply only to new set up of a plan or does it cover adding participant's to an existing plan?
